What is a Long Position?
Going "Long" means buying an asset with the expectation that it will rise in value. If you buy Bitcoin at $50,000 and sell it at $60,000, you profit from the price increase.
What is a Short Position?
Going "Short" means borrowing an asset from a broker or exchange, selling it immediately, and hoping the price will fall so you can buy it back cheaper later ("covering" your short). If you borrow and sell at $60,000, and later buy it back for $50,000, you keep the $10,000 difference as profit.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this include leverage?
This tool calculates the fundamental percentage move. PNL using margin/leverage is generally Position Size × Leverage × Profit%.
Can I lose more than my initial investment?
If you are simply holding a long spot position without leverage, you can only lose 100% of your investment. However, if you short an asset without a stop-loss, your potential losses are theoretically infinite as the price can keep rising indefinitely.
Are trading fees included?
No. For exact break-even calculations factoring in exchange taker/maker fees, please use our dedicated Break Even Calculator from the sidebar.
