What is a Maintenance Margin?
Maintenance margin is the minimum amount of equity you must hold in your margin account to keep a position open. For most major pairs like BTC or ETH on Binance, the minimum maintenance margin is 0.5%. If your equity falls below this percentage, the exchange forcefully closes (liquidates) your trade.
Why are Long and Short formulas different?
A Long trade profits when prices rise, therefore liquidation happens below your entry. A Short trade profits when prices fall, meaning your liquidation price sits above your entry price to cover infinite theoretical losses as an asset pumps.
Is 100x leverage safe?
Absolutely not. At 100x leverage, your position will be entirely liquidated if the asset moves against you by less than 1% (accounting for maintenance margin). High leverage is predominantly used for gambling, not sustainable professional trading.
